Taxonomy and Classification

On the 1st of May 1753, Species Plantarum by Carl Linnaeus was published. This work was the formal start date of plant taxonomy which was later adopted by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. This book made the so-called binomial or binary nomenclature acknowledged and widespread way of easily, shortly, and handy classifying species, which system, we still use today.

The binary names consist of two parts. The first part of the name – the generic name – identifies the genus to which the species belongs, while the second part – the specific name or specific epithet – identifies the species within the genus. For example, modern humans belong to the genus Homo and within this genus to the species Homo sapiens.
