Two of the most human characteristics are sharing and curiosity. They led us to discover the universe inside us as well as the outer space. Since the beginning of Western Civilisation, all the philosophers were obsessed in studying and discussing the essence of Nature. We could say that Earth & Planetary Sciences started back there in Ancient Greece with the works of Democritus and walked a long way through Galilei, Copernicus, Newton,Einstein and Stephen Hawking. The more we explore, the bigger grows our perception for theworlds beyond. Every single piece of extant matter on planet Earth contains the DNA of the entire Universe. We could only imagine how much pivotal knowledge, how many alternative energy sources and important answers are waiting still hidden for us. Future lies out there in the vast cosmic ocean as Carl Sagan loved to say. Nowadays, these words sound even more relevant since we faced the limits of our home planet and the need to develop new sustainablesolutions for the current environmental and social problems. The welfare of futuregenerations depends on our mutual endeavours.

Earth & Planetary Sciences (EPS)

are strong theoretical and practical multidisciplinary scientific studies of the structure and the processes that form planets and planetary systems. EPS focuses on in-depth researches and understanding of lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, and then, by applying the most recent discoveries from our home planet, EPS scientist are chasing the goal to comprehend the substances and dynamics of celestial objects. Modern technological advancements as Geographic Information Systems(GIS), land and oceanic probes, satellites, space crafts or landers, have opened a completely new page of scientific approaches that could elucidate and fathom the complexity of natural phenomena. We are now able to gauge and register even the smallest aberration in a given experiment and thereby abstract data with unbelievable accuracy. What has been thought of as science fiction, have become reality.

Moreover, the progress of EPS could boost new and revolutionary problem-solving methods for overcoming the growing resources consumption, as well as, global and social issues. The contemporary boom in technological and informational advancements has made huge and ambivalent impact on both nature and society. On the one hand, we are constantly improving our tools and enhancing our skills to predict and control the whims of Nature, but on the other hand, human kind is endangering other species and increasingly worsening the environmental conditions. The only solution for that pressing problem is to establish organic union between Earth & Planetary Sciences and Social Sciences. In other words, to exploit the scientific efforts and achievement in favour of environment, biodiversity and human kind as part of it all. If we use Maslow’s pyramid as an analogy, we should first satisfy our basic needsand securities, in order to proceed with the biggest objective of scientific activities – understanding the laws and mechanisms that rule the Nature. EPS provide that solid ground on top of which, we could raise our hands towards our ideals and utilize the technological progress of science in more conscious, moral, and eco-friendly manner.
