In this work, synthesis and swelling of a superabsorbent hydrogel based on copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylamide filled with pectin were investigated. The structure, thermal stability, sorption capacity and morphologies of the developed composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analysis (TG-DSC), voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the swelling properties, and the stimuli-responsive behaviors of the composite in various medium were evaluated systematically. Studies and the analysis of absorption processes of lead ions from aqueous solutions showed that the pectin-containing polymer composite has high degree of affinity with of heavy metal ions. Developed pectin-containing hydrogel composite can be effectively used for removal from water solutions of toxic connections.
